Howard, Phils trying to avoid arbitration

Arbitration hearings in front of a three-person panel in Phoenix were scheduled to begin on Monday, and even though the first-year GM still has one big potential case in front of him — that of Ryan Howard — Ruben Amaro Jr. is still hoping to reach a deal with his slugging first baseman.
