Offense Fails Hamels Again as Phils Fall to Fish

The Marlins now have 13 wins on the season.  Four have come against the Phillies.  After showing signs of life against some of baseball’s best teams in recent weeks, the Phils offense laid an egg on Monday night in Miami, losing 5-1 to the Marlins and again leaving an effective Cole Hamels out to dry.  Alex Sanabia notched the win for the Marlins and Justin Ruggiano provided two key RBIs.

HAMELS RETURNS TO FORM

- Apart from two mistakes, Hamels, now 1-7, was dominant on Monday night.  He walked none and struck out 10 Marlins in only six innings before being removed for a pinch hitter.  Pitch count (89 pitches) and command (67 strikes) were not an issue, unlike recent outings.  Cole has now allowed three earned runs in 20 innings against the Fish, and has received a grand total of one run from his offense.

- With the free-swinging Marcell Ozuna buried in a 1-2 hole in the first inning, Hamels decided to stick with his fastball, which Ozuna stung up the middle, plating the Marlins first run.  Some say that Hamels has shown an overreliance on the cutter this season… this was just the latest example of his pitch selection costing him.

- Hamels appeared to be very angry with himself after allowing an RBI double to Ruggiano in the sixth that put Miami ahead 2-1.  But Cole really did look good – striking out double digits for the first time this year.  He did it three times last year, fanning 10 each time.  At one point, Hamels recorded eight of nine outs via punch out.

BULLPEN, DEFENSE PROBLEMS FOR PHILS

- Hamels departed trailing only 2-1, but Justin De Fratus and Phillippe Aumont couldn’t keep it close.  In 1.2 innings, the right-handed duo combined for three earned runs on four hits to put the game out of reach.

- Michael Young couldn’t handle a pick-off attempt from Hamels in the fifth, which allowed Chris Coghlan to advance to second.  While the error was charged to Hamels, it did not appear to be a difficult play.  Young also allowed a Dom Brown throw from leftfield to get past him yesterday, but again, he was not charged with an error.

- On Ruggiano’s go-ahead double in the sixth, Delmon Young took an awful route to the ball, spinning his body and his wheels before finally heading in the right direction.  While only a good right fielder makes that catch – which Young is far from – he could have prevented the run from scoring had he been there to catch the ball off the wall.  Coincidentally, Ruggiano tracked down a laser off the bat of Young in the second, making a basket catch just short of the warning track in right center.

OFFENSE SPUTTERS AGAINST SANABIA

- The Phillies’ offense hit a new low on Monday night, getting shut down by the struggling Sanabia.  Entering Monday, Sanabia had allowed 63 hits and 24 walks in 51.1 innings.  The Phils totaled seven hits and two walks, incomprehensibly swinging at the first pitch in 16 of their 35 at-bats.  Marlins pitchers needed only 118 pitches to get through nine innings.  Two double plays killed leadoff singles for the Phils and they were unable to capitalize on a first-and-third with one out situation in the seventh.

- Domonic Brown hit a first-pitch, hanging change-up from Sanabia over the right field wall in the second inning to knot the score at one.  Brown, who now leads the team in homers with eight, has been very patient against right-handers and very aggressive against lefties.  In this at-bat it was the exact opposite, so it’s good to see him keep pitchers guessing.

- Brown stole a bag in the fourth inning, giving him two steals in the past two games.  While replays showed he might have been out, Brown is now two-for-two on stolen base attempts this season.  He notched double digit steals six times in the minors, so it’ll be interesting to see if more will come as he gains confidence.

DID YOU NOTICE?

- Ben Revere, batting second, appears to be back in Charlie Manuel’s good graces, as he was slotted in the top half of the lineup for the third straight game.  After an awful April, Revere entered Monday hitting .406 in May before going 0-for-4 on the night.

- Revere failed to execute a hit-and-run in the first, hitting a ball right at second base (as opposed to the open hole at shortstop), which resulted in a double play.  The speedy Revere has grounded into an unfathomable six twin-killings this season in only 126 at-bats.  He hit into eight in 2012 and seven in 2011.

- Hamels allowed an easy steal to Adeiny Hechavarria in the first inning, which has seemed to happen a lot this year.  He has let up eight steals in 2013, putting him on pace to allow around 29 this year.  His previous totals over the last six years, starting with 2012; 23, 23, 10, 18, 15 and 14.

- After allowing a leadoff triple to Coghlan in the second, Hamels got two pop ups and a strikeout to escape the inning unscathed.  After covering what seemed like 40 yards, Ben Revere got his glove on the ball but was unable to make the catch.

Another Stellar Performance from Hamels in 4-3 Win

Posted by Amanda Orr  Published in 2012 Game Recaps, Aramis Ramirez, Changeup, Charlie Manuel, Cole Hamels, Complete Game, Cruise Control, Double Digits, Eighth Inning, Game Shutout, Hamel, Homer, Homers, John Mayberry Jr, Jonathan, Jonathan Lucroy, Kratz, Milwaukee Brewers, Ninth Inning, Phillies, Posts, Quick Outs, Ryan Braun, Ryan Howard, Stellar Performance, Strikes, Twentieth Time, Victory

Hamels strikes out 10 in his 14th win of the year.

Not quite a complete game shutout, but Cole Hamels still dominated in the Phillies 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.  Their win today puts them in position to split series tomorrow.

ANOTHER SOLID PERFORMANCE FROM HAMELS

-Aramis Ramirez led off the second inning with a home run.  In the same inning, the Brewers would get a runner in scoring position with one out.  Hamels was able to escape the jam with a little help from a baserunning mistake and the defense.  Hamels settled down and would remain in cruise control until the eighth inning.

-Cole Hamels finished the night after 7.2 innings.  He allowed three runs on eight hits and a walk.  His changeup was filthy, as he struck out ten in his 14th win.

-For the twentieth time in his career, Hamels reached double digits in strikeouts.

-Hamels’ earned run average remains under three for the year, currently standing at 2.94.  He continues to be the Phillies’ best pitcher this season.  If there is any bright side to this 2012 season, it’s Cole Hamels.

MAYBERRY AND KRATZ GO BACK-TO-BACK

-John Mayberry Jr. put the Phillies on the board in the second inning with a two-run home run to left field.  To follow Mayberry, Eric Kratz hit a home run of his own.  The back-to-back homers were nearly hit in the same spot, only the bomb Kratz hit was hit a little higher and further.

-The Phillies got their fourth run thanks to a Ryan Howard RBI double in the third inning.

BRAUN HURTS PHILLIES… AGAIN

-Hamels was able to get two quick outs in the eighth inning, but Jonathan Lucroy kept the inning alive with a single.  That single turned out to be significant, because Ryan Braun followed with a home run to right field, making it a 4-3 game.

-Braun has killed the Phillies throughout this series, as tonight’s homer was his third of the series.  Braun is currently 6-for-11 with 6 RBI during this series.  He is 13-for-23 (.565) with 6 HR against the Phillies in 2012.

PAPELBON CLOSES THE DEAL

-After Hamels gave up the home run to Braun, Charlie Manuel decided to bring in Papelbon for the four-out save.  Papelbon easily got out of the eighth inning.

-Papelbon had a quick 1-2-3 ninth inning.  He struck out three over an inning and a third to secure the save.  Papelbon looked pretty nasty in the last inning, hitting 95+ on the gun.

Hamels Wins Sixth In A Row

Posted by Kieran Carobine  Published in 12th Game, 2012 Game Recaps, Batters, Career, Carlos Ruiz, Chooch, Cole Hamels, Double Digits, Earned Runs, Eight Games, Five Games, Free Agent, Galvis, Games, Heck, Homer, Hunter Pence, Jimmy Rollins, Jonathan, Jonathan Papelbon, Launching Pad, Lead, Leads, Lefty, Patience, Patience Is A Virtue, Phillies, Posts, Rbis, Red Sox, Rollins, Roy Halladay, Score, Sixth Game, Sixth Straight Game, Walks, Win Ace, Wins

Cole Hamels strikes out nine and wins his sixth straight game.

The Phillies aren’t the greatest during inter league play.  Heck, the National League has always been looked at as the inferior league.  The Red Sox came into town in sort of the same boat as the Phillies.  They are a team with a lot of talent that has seen injuries plague the early start of this season.

Anyways, we have Cole Hamels.  Hamels won his sixth game in a row.  This is the first time in his career he has done that.  The Phillies put him out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and although the Red Sox battled back, Jonathan Papelbon saved his 12th game in as many chances for a 6-4 Phillies win.

Ace in the bucket - There is no need to tell Cole what he is pitching for this season.  Hamels is a free agent when this season is over and he is showing the Phillies front office why they should keep him around.  The lefty struck out nine batters in seven innings.  He gave up three earned runs, which included two solo home runs.

Patience is a virtue - Three out of the first four hitters for the Phillies drew walks in the first inning.  They would eventually go on to score four runs in the inning with only gathering one hit.  The Phillies drew six walks in the game.  Jimmy Rollins now has six walks in his last five games.  Before that he only had seven all season.

Choochtastic - Carlos Ruiz went 2-for-3 tonight and continues to ‘impress’ everyone.  Ruiz has always been known as the catcher behind Hamels, Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee.  This season he is showing off his bat in the first 40 games of the season.  Chooch has 14 hits and 10 RBIs in his last eight games and leads all catchers in batting average, hits and home runs.

Launching pad – There were five home runs hit in tonight’s game.  I won’t even touch on the Boston bombs but Freddy Galvis and Hunter Pence took Red Sox pitching deep.  It was Glavis’ second homer of the season and Pence’s 5th inning shot put him in double digits for the season.

Keep it going - The Phillies won their sixth game in a row and have now won eight of their last nine since being swept by the Mets.  Like I said, Papelbon saved his 12th game of the season against his former team.  The Phillies will send Joe Blanton to the hill tomorrow to take on Jon Lester.

Top Moment #11: Phillies Rebound from Slow Start in NLDS Game One

Posted by Amanda Orr  Published in Batters, Blink Of An Eye, Cardinals, Double Digits, First Game, Game 1, Game One, Hearts, Kyle Lohse, Lance Berkman, Laugher, Memorable Moment, Michael Stutes, Mistake, Ninth Inning, Pence, Phillies, Phillies Fan, Phillies Fans, Photo, Pitch, Posts, Raul Ibanez, Rbis, Rebound Game, Roy Halladay, Ryan Howard, Sixth Inning, Top 20 Moments of 2011, Victorino

As Lance Berkman sent Roy Halladay’s offering deep into the right field seats, the hearts of Phillies fans sank.  It seemed like the game was over, but any true Phillies fan knows never to doubt their team.

Despite the three-spot in the first inning, Halladay pitched magnificently as he settled down.  The pitch to Berkman was the only mistake he made the entire night.  Unfortunately, Kyle Lohse was retiring batter after batter.  Luckily, that all changed in the sixth inning.

Photo: AP

By the blink of an eye, the Phillies took the lead.  Ryan Howard’s towering three-run home run put the Phillies up by one.  Two batters later, Raul Ibanez added to the madness by crushing a two-run bomb of his own.

Then, it turned into a laugher.  The Phillies continued to add on runs.  Howard, Victorino, Ibanez, and Pence each contributed RBIs.

Michael Stutes surrendered three runs in the ninth inning, but the Cardinals still didn’t stand a chance as the Phillies pounded out double digits in their 11-6 win.

Halladay and Howard brought their A-game to the first game in the Division Series.  Obviously, the series did not end the way the Phillies would have liked, but the Game 1 victory remains a memorable moment from the 2011 season.

Lee Falters as Phillies Fall in Washington

Posted by Michael Baumann  Published in 2011 Game Recaps, Blink Of An Eye, Chase Utley, Citizens Bank Park, Coors Field, Danys Baez, Dom Brown, Domonic, Double Digits, Espinosa, Falters, Fly Ball, Jason Marquis, Joe Morgan, John Mayberry, Kyle Kendrick, Mike Zagurski, Placido Polanco, Posts, Relief Pitcher, Roy Halladay, Silver Linings

Neither Cliff Lee nor Danny Espinosa were themselves tonight. Lee looked more like Kyle Kendrick than anything else, and Espinosa, for one night only, turned into the second coming of Joe Morgan. The Phillies’ second ace continued a run of mortality, as he and Roy Halladay gave up four runs or more in consecutive starts for the first time all season. Lee allowed six runs, all earned, on seven hits, two of them home runs by Espinosa, in only 5 1/3 innings, the first time he’d been knocked out before completing six since he was shelled in Atlanta in his second start of the year.

The result? The Nationals became the first team to score in double digits against the Phillies since a 12-11 win over the Rockies at Coors Field last Sept. 2, and emerged victorious over the Phillies by a score of 10-2.

Espinosa belted his ninth and tenth home runs of the year, a three-run shot to cap a five-run third and a solo shot to lead off the sixth. The third inning, which ended with the Phillies down five, happened, it seemed, in the blink of an eye, as the Nationals scored all five runs on only 14 pitches before batting around.

At first, it looked like the blow wouldn’t be fatal, as John Mayberry and Domonic Brown hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the fifth, then, four batters later, Chase Utley hit a two-out fly ball to right that missed being a home run by only a few feet. With several innings to go and Jason Marquis on the mound, a comeback was not out of the question.

Then everything truly went in the tank. First, Espinosa homered again in the sixth, then the Nats put up three more in the seventh off Danys Baez, then another in the eighth off Mike Zagurski, who pulled the unusual trick of walking a relief pitcher.

For those of you interested in silver linings, Dom Brown homered and doubled, and Placido Polanco continued to churn out single after single, adding two to the cause this evening. In all, it was a night to forget at Citizens Bank Park South. Roy Oswalt and John Lannan will face off tomorrow in the getaway game.
